Scones are a classic British treat that are perfect for breakfast or afternoon tea. They are light and fluffy, with a slightly sweet and buttery flavor. They are also incredibly easy to make at home, and can be customized with different add-ins like berries or chocolate chips. In this recipe, we’ll be making basic scones that are perfect on their own or with a dollop of jam and clotted cream.

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the cold, cubed butter to the bowl and cut it into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or fork. Continue until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and beaten egg.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overwork the dough.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it a few times until it forms a smooth ball.
  • Roll the dough out to about 3/4 inch thickness.
  • Cut the dough into circles using a biscuit cutter or glass.
  • Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with a little bit of milk or cream. If desired, sprinkle some coarse sugar on top.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown.
  • Serve warm with butter, jam, and clotted cream.
