Scones are a classic British treat that are perfect for breakfast or afternoon tea. In this recipe, we’ll be making basic scones that are perfect on their own or with a dollop of jam and clotted cream.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Add the cold, cubed butter to the bowl and cut it into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or fork. Continue until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and beaten egg.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overwork the dough.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it a few times until it forms a smooth ball.
Roll the dough out to about 3/4 inch thickness.
Cut the dough into circles using a biscuit cutter or glass.
Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with a little bit of milk or cream. If desired, sprinkle some coarse sugar on top.
Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown.
