The hamburger is a classic American dish that has become popular all around the world. In this recipe, we will be making classic American burgers that are perfect for a weekend barbecue or a quick weeknight dinner.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Use your hands to mix the ingredients together until well combined.
Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty. Use your hands to flatten the patties slightly, making a small indentation in the center of each patty.
Place the patties on the grill or skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until cooked to your liking.
During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty and allow it to melt.
Toast the hamburger buns on the grill or skillet for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned.
Assemble the burgers by placing a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by a slice of tomato and a slice of red onion. Place the cooked patty on top, and add ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise to taste. Cover with the top half of the bun and serve immediately.
Notes
Additional tips: For an extra flavorful burger, mix in diced onions, garlic, or Worcestershire sauce into the ground beef. To make a healthier burger, consider using ground turkey or chicken instead of beef, or serving the burger without a bun and with a side salad.
