For the cake:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Grease two 8-inch round cake pans with non-stick cooking spray.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer until well combined.
  • Add the hot water to the mixing bowl and stir until the mixture is smooth.
  • Pour the cake batter into the prepared cake pans and smooth out the top with a rubber spatula.

For the frosting:
