For The Olive Salad:
- 1 cup Green Olives Pitted And Chopped
- 1/2 cup Kalamata Olives Pitted And Chopped
- 1/4 cup Red Bell Pepper Chopped, Roasted
- 2 tbsp Capers Drained And Chopped
- 2 Garlic Cloves Minced
- 2 tbsp Red Wine Vinegar
- 2 tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 tsp Dried Oregano
- 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
For The Muffuletta Sandwich:
- 1 loaf Sicilian-Style Bread Or
- Italian Bread
- 1/2 pound Ham Thinly Sliced
- 1/2 pound Salami Thinly Sliced
- 1/2 pound Mortadella Thinly Sliced
- 1/2 pound Provolone Cheese Thinly Sliced
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the green olives, Kalamata olives, roasted red peppers, capers, minced garlic, red wine vinegar, olive oil, dried oregano, and black pepper. Stir well to combine. Set aside for the flavors to meld.
- Slice the round loaf of bread in half horizontally. Remove some of the soft center to create a hollowed-out cavity.
- Spread a generous amount of the olive salad on the bottom half of the bread.
- Layer the ham, salami, mortadella, and provolone cheese evenly over the olive salad.
- Place the top half of the bread on top of the layered meats and cheese.
- Preheat a grill or stovetop panini press over medium heat. If using a stovetop panini press, preheat a heavy skillet or press as well.
- Wrap the Muffuletta sandwich tightly in parchment paper or aluminum foil.
- Place the wrapped sandwich on the grill or panini press and place the heated heavy skillet or press on top to flatten the sandwich slightly.
- Grill the sandwich for about 4-5 minutes per side until the bread is toasted and the cheese is melted.
- Remove the sandwich from the grill or panini press and let it rest for a few minutes.
- Unwrap the sandwich, cut it into quarters, and serve warm.
