Equipment
- Rice Cooker Or
- Onigiri Mold Or
- Damp Hands
Ingredients
- 2 cup Sushi Rice
- 2 1/4 cup Water
- 1/4 cup Rice Vinegar
- 2 tbsp Sugar
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 bowl Water (For Wetting Hands)
Filling Options:
- Salmon Grilled
- Pickled Plum
- Seasoned Cooked Vegetables
Optional Toppings:
- Nori Seaweed
- Sesame Seeds
- Furikake (Japanese Rice Seasoning)
Instructions
- Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Drain the rice and transfer it to a rice cooker or pot.
- Add water to the rice cooker or pot and cook the rice according to the manufacturer's instructions or until it's tender and fully cooked.
- In a small bowl, combine rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Microwave the mixture for about 30 seconds, stirring until the sugar and salt dissolve.
- Transfer the cooked rice to a large mixing bowl. Pour the vinegar mixture over the rice and gently fold it in with a rice paddle or spatula to evenly distribute the seasoning.
- Allow the seasoned rice to cool slightly, making it easier to handle.
- Wet your hands with water to prevent the rice from sticking. Take a handful of rice and shape it into a triangle or cylindrical shape, creating a well in the center for the filling.
- Place a small amount of your desired filling (such as grilled salmon, pickled plum, or seasoned cooked vegetables) in the well of the rice.
- Cover the filling with more rice and shape it into a compact triangle or cylinder. Use an onigiri mold or wet hands to achieve a uniform shape.
- Optional: Wrap the finished Onigiri in a strip of Nori seaweed for added flavor and presentation.
- Repeat the process with the remaining rice and fillings.
- Serve the homemade Onigiri immediately or wrap them individually in plastic wrap for later enjoyment.
